1) I:Cube – “M” Megamix
Levam só 17 segundos (a introdução “Not Important” é a idéia manjada do ouvinte procurando a estação de rádio preferida) até o DJ e produtor francês Nicolas Chaix ajustar a frequência e mandar 23 balaços no disco de festa que faltava em 2012. E vem tudo mixado num pacotão em que as faixas vão de um à, no máximo, cinco minutos: house, downtempo, synthpop, disco, techno… Apropriadamente chamado de “M” Megamix, o álbum celebra em 55 minutos, emoções que vão da euforia da pista multicolorida e barulhenta (“Transpiration”) à pasmaceira chill out estatelada no sofá do lounge pós-festa (“Omamo”, “SH 50 Storm”). Atenção especial ao baixo sedutor de “Bajo Bajo” (o pecado-mor de Megamix: a faixa dura só um minuto e meio!), a psicoléptica “Your Brain” (que te leva pra um rolê rapidinho pelos cantos do seu cérebro não visitados com muita assiduidade), o technopop instrumental de “In Alpha” e “Le Rocher Aux Singes”, a daftpunkiana “Get the Fever”, a afrodigital “Makossa Suspens” e o garage house de “Club Miniature”.
2) Photek – KU:PALM
O clima tenso/robótico ronda as 12 faixas, e até quando o BPM sobe, ameaçando transformar-se em techno de pista (duas vezes: em “Oshun” e “One Of A Kind”), o Blade Runner sonoro de Photek não perde a intensidade. A produção é minuciosa e extraordinária, o som é forte e cristalino – mesmo com a espetacular profusão de batidas orgânicas em “Pyramid” (de inspiração oriental), dá pra definir cada kick de bumbo, cada ataque de prato, cada batida no aro e cada rufo de caixa. A trinca que abre o disco é de cair o queixo. A épica “Signals” é a “Papua New Guinea” de 2012, com seu bleep mântrico e subgraves de estourar os alto-falantes. “Quadrant” substitui a caixa da bateria por palmas sintéticas, mas as pedaladas do bumbo garantem um ponto a mais para a variedade rítmica de KU:PALM. Em “Aviator”, Photek cria um gancho absolutamente pegajoso e mutante de sintetizador, enquanto slaps de baixo e samples vocais fundem-se ao groove paquidérmico e à batida poderosa. A melancólica “Sleepwalking” (com vocais da cantora búlgara Lina Larsson), é um lindo pedaço de blues sintético, e “This Love” encerra o álbum de forma densa, com a voz rouca do cantor folk Ray LaMontagne acompanhada por sintetizadores pesados, batida estrondosa e oscilações de baixo típicas do dubstep.
3) Saint Etienne – Words and Music By Saint Etienne
As referências pop estão cuidadosamente espalhadas nas canções, na faixa de abertura (“Over The Border”) citando ícones como New Order, Marc Bolan, NME, Top Of The Pops e Factory Records, na sensação de escapismo que os fones de ouvido proporcionam com sua canção predileta (“I’ve Got Your Music”), na leveza baleárica de “Heading For The Fair”, no arranjo de cordas inspirado de “Last Days Of Disco”, nas citações de hit singles número 1 na Inglaterra (“Popular”), no título auto-explicativo de “DJ”, na letra-diário de Sarah Cracknell em “When I Was Seventeen”, no pop barroco de “I Threw It All Away” e finalmente na candura inspirada em Carpenters de “Haunted Jukebox”. Words and Music é um disco acessível e dançante sem ser vulgar, sensível e delicado sem ser chato. E pra completar, ainda tem um CD extra com 12 faixas remixadas por gente finíssima como Two Bears, Erol Alkan, Golden Filter e Tom Middleton.
4) Cooly G – Playin Me
Fosse julgar pela capa, eu diria se tratar de um disco de R&B fuleiro. Nada disso. O que a londrina Merrisa Campbell oferece em seu debut Playin Me é um coquetel sedutor de dubstep embebido em generosas doses de dub e UK garage. É uma quebradeira cool, relaxada e sexy, com vocais sobrepostos e ritmos trôpegos. Produtora, cantora e DJ, Cooly G me impressionou bastante pelas programações de bateria no disco, especialmente “What Airtime” pela sequência insana de socadas do bumbo e “Is It Gone” pela profusão de efeitos. Mas isso é só a parte técnica, porque o que tem aqui de canções genericamente inclassificáveis como “He Said I Said” (onde um loop de guitarra cria uma expectativa que só intensifica o suspense sobre pra onde a faixa vai: reggae? soul?), trips sossegadas (“Landscapes”), ótimos vocais (em “Come Into My Room” é difícil resistir ao pedido), reggae futurista (“Sunshine”) e até um cover de “Trouble” (Coldplay) tão deliciosa quanto a original. Surpreendente.
5) Squarepusher – Ufabulum
Reconheço que nunca ouvi um Squarepusher tão palatável quanto o de “Unreal Square” – vai ver foi por isso mesmo que ele chamou essa música assim. Mas não se engane. A melodia ingênua e o rufar marcial dos tambores vai só até a metade da faixa: dali pra frente Jenkinson trata de subverter tudo, revirando as baterias e partindo os teclados em pedacinhos. Em “Energy Wizard” é a mesma coisa: sintetizadores afáveis começam fazendo carinho nos seus ouvidos mas logo se transformam em monstros cibernéticos pulando de um lado para outro dos fones de ouvido. Na progressiva “Stadium Ice” parece que um Steve Vai autômato aparece solando entre batidas trêmulas e timbres new age. A ameaçadora “Red In Blue” divide o álbum. A partir daí, Ufabulum entra num terreno escuro de eletrônica abstrata e experimental de nada fácil audição. As ásperas “The Metallurgist”, “Drax 2″ e “303 Scopem Hard” derrubam teses levantadas por fãs desconfiados de que Jenkinson teria diluído sua música.
6) Chromatics – Kill For Love
Ouvir Kill For Love é imaginar como seria se o New Order tivesse escolhido a tecladista Gillian Gilbert como vocalista ao invés de Barney Sumner. Talvez Movement, debut da banda inglesa lançado em Novembro de 1981 soasse assim. Apesar da voz pequenininha, Ruth Radelet encaixa-se confortavelmente aos sintetizadores congelados e de timbres fascinantes (o que é aquele teclado de “Lady”?). Pós-punk elegante, quase dançável sob suas baterias nada complexas (“The Page”) e com riffs de guitarra básicos e certeiros (“Back From The Grave”), Kill For Love é um disco estranhamente encantador, dolorosamente bonito – uma ponte bem cimentada entre o indie e o eletrônico analógico com canções bem feitas e um cover escolhido à dedo: “Hey Hey, My My” de Neil Young abre o disco creditada apenas como “Into the Black”. Climático e melancólico, dos títulos das faixas (“Dust to Dust”, “No Escape”, “Back From The Grave”) até as composições instrumentais nubladas (“There’s a Light Out On the Horizon”, “Broken Mirrors”), Kill For Love exige uma hora e meia de dedicação à sua viagem sombria e de nada fácil digestão, mas extremamente recompensadora. Bom dia, tristeza.
7) The 2 Bears – Be Strong
É house alto-astral de ritmos e texturas bem pensados: sente os graves e as cordas sensacionais de “Be Strong” ou o sacolejo popíssimo de “Work”. É esquisitinho sem assustar muito em “Time In Mind” (que lembra o KLF de “Justified & Ancient” com sua steel guitar serpenteando no meio da batida ragga) e “Church” (misturinha de eletrônica com côro infantil, órgão e percussão afro-caribenha). “Get Together” talvez seja a faixa que guarde mais semelhança com os trabalhos do Hot Chip, onde o ritmo é engrenado com precisão matemática e os teclados são comportados. Joe Goddard só ameaça estragar tudo com sua voz em duas ocasiões: ele quebra o clima safado de “Bear Hug” com um refrão pouco inspirado, mas só consegue soar fora do lugar mesmo em “Warm & Easy”. Ainda bem.
8) In Flagranti – Dissimilated by-products (Volume 2)
Tarefa ingrata categorizar o som do duo In Flagranti. É um coquetel que mistura disco, electro, funk, rock, mas com um lado obscuro de samples irreconhecíveis, produção sujinha e faixas que soam como demos inacabadas. O recente Dissimilated by-products (Volume 2) segue a lógica chacriniana de confundir ao invés de explicar, já que é uma continuação sem antecessor. Exibe em suas 12 faixas uma dance music sem texturas eletrônicas exageradas, soando como house music pré-histórica com samples enfiados à força nas composições. É assim na insana abertura “All That and a Bag of Chips” e nas baterias toscas de “Gridlock”. Sasha Crnobrnja e Alex Gloor exploram os grooves orgânicos nas levadas de violão de “Humdrum”, no funk “Autoscopy” e no electro-blues esquisitão de “Allemande”. Aliás, esquisitice aqui é qualidade. Na afro-alucinada “Physical Maturity”, a dupla lembra as colagens sem limites do Coldcut no final dos 80. Ainda inutilizam a boa linha de baixo de “Lingual Tibulation” com um loop vocal irritante e constroem uma ponte imaginária entre Nova Iorque e Ibiza nas disco-baleáricas “Cognition” e “Cephalalgia”. No final das contas, Dissimilated by-products (Volume 2) causa a estranha sensação de estimular a curiosidade de ver no que vão dar as faixas, mesmo com um certo desconforto auditivo. É um prazer mórbido tão difícil de traduzir quanto a música do In Flagranti.
9) Light Asylum – Light Asylum
A fusão das programações de bateria neandertalóides do Nitzer Ebb com os sintetizadores disparados tecla por tecla do Yazoo. O diferencial são os vocais da negona locaça Shannon Funchess, que incorpora uma Grace Jones electro, ora em ataques de fúria à Douglas McCarthy (“IPC”), ora em momentos de pura paixão à Alison Moyet (“Shallow Tears”). Disco synthpop do ano.
10) XXYYXX – XXYYXX
Um relaxante blend downtempo de beats beeem preguiçosos (“About You”), vocais adulterados (sem auto-tune, ao menos), graves subterrâneos, temas angelicais (“DMT”) e blues eletrônico (“TIED2U”). O hype assusta, mas dá pra ouvir o disco na boa sem se preocupar com o falatório exagerado sobre Marcel Everett. Ele tem talento, mas o cara não reinventa a roda com XXYYXX. É um disco bem feitinho, cheio de texturas, ambiências e informação musical, que não se faz assim, da noite pro dia.
